“Starting a nonprofit is one of the most difficult and most rewarding things that I've ever done. It's not something that you enter into lightly,” says John. “There are so many things that you must do. You have to be strong in administration. You have to be strong in verbal, written communications. You also must possess a passion for what you're going to do. Without the passion, you're not going to last.”

Watch the video to hear all of John’s cautions and tips for starting a nonprofit—the hardships  that come and how to succeed through them.

Starting a nonprofit is one of the most difficult and most rewarding things that I've ever done. It's not something that you enter into lightly. I highly recommend a resource by Cal Newport. The title of his book is, So Good That They Can't Ignore You, and he stole that title from Steve Martin in an interview with Charlie Rose. And Martin's advice, and it's the same advice that I would even relay on to this day to people starting any kind of entrepreneurial or social entrepreneurial work is acquire the skills that makes you fantastic and a cut above and exceptional in your field.

There are so many things that you must do. You have to be strong in administration. You have to be strong in verbal, written communications. You also must possess a passion for what you're going to do. Without the passion, you're not going to last. The passion is what keeps you. I feel like so many fail today because they don't realize the tax that it takes on you, the tax that it takes on the loved ones around you who supports you.

There are going to be times in your organization where you're not going to make the payroll and you have to have a plan B, C, D, E, F, G. There are going to be times when you do not feel like there's even much organization to your organization. And there are going to be seasons where you feel like that you are the only one championing your organization and your mission. And you have to be strong in them. And you have to be secure in that. And it has to be something that you're called to. For me, it's an inner sense of calling. It's a passion. Be confident in it and use the skills that you've acquired throughout your lifetime and put those skills to work in your organization.
