“[With the election,] I couldn't rest knowing that if I didn't step up, then I wasn't sure who would,” says Aja. “And I think that that's truly the essence of what brave leadership is.”

When I considered that, as a woman coming in and being 31 years old, I was elected. I ran against 11 other candidates. I ran against the current mayor, the mayor that preceded him. They represented 20 years of leadership and when I made that decision, it wasn't that I thought I was so brave, or I was so fearless, but I couldn't afford, I couldn't rest, knowing that if I didn't step up, then I wasn't sure who would. And I think that that's truly the essence of what brave leadership is.

It's about moving forward and doing those tough things that no one else may want to do. And when we consider that we're all humans, we're all leaders in this room and those that are watching, and you have all made an intentional decision to invest in yourselves as leaders. But think about all the men and women's lives that you've been able to change because of the decision that you have made.
