How do you stay grounded in today’s pace of change?

How do you anchor your leadership in the face such rapid change? Two key actions, says Amy. First, never stop learning. Second, become even more intentional about affecting internal change (within you) and the environment you create with others.

 

How do you do that in the face of speed … constant change … distraction and noise? You may be surprised that the key actions Amy recommends go against your leadership instincts. “But connecting those dots can be the most powerful thing a leader could possibly ever do,” says Amy.

So leaders today are facing probably the most monumental challenges against the pace of change. And it’s something we’ve all talked about, but we can really all see it. There is a fantastic YouTube video with Eddie Obeng. He talks about that the pace of change has overtaken the pace of learning and that we’re actually creating things in organizations and by the time we create them, they’re actually already obsolete. So the pressure that puts on leadership to try to get things right, and at the same time, we’re probably able to get more data and more analysis on everything as well.

So the visibility of what we’re doing is going up, but yet the change is constantly switching up on us. So leaders, in the face of that, cannot be reactive. And in the days where business models could take time to work themselves out and find stability in a marketplace, now, not so much. The implication for leadership is that your leadership is going to be tested continuously and you’re going to be in new environments continuously. And you have to give something back different from yourself from one environment to the next.

So how do you anchor your leadership in the face of all that? Well, first of all, you cannot stop learning. You have to be able to continue to keep opening yourself to learning, which is absolutely core. The second thing that is huge is that you have to learn how to be intentional about two environments. The first environment is inside yourself and the second environment is the environment you create with others. So how do you do that? Well, this world that not only is moving ridiculously fast is also hooking us up to the speed. It’s got us hooked in with our electronics, of course, and the behaviors that go with electronics, and just simply the fact that we now might have to build things that we just have to quickly dismantle. Because of all of that, there’s something that a leader that has to do that in the face of all that speed and change and noise is very counter intuitive. And that’s to completely pull back and become more reflective and more paced and intentional instead of doing more, asking more, thinking more. So getting intentional about these two environments. And that goes back to the three questions, which is, I always think about these three questions, is what is your center, what are you in the center of, and how do you create a new environment in the midst of all of that so that a leader is grounded and not reactive? And it takes a journey for a leader. It takes an absolute journey for them to work on themselves to be able to influence the environment. And connecting those dots can be the most powerful thing a leader could possibly ever do.
