When you get a room full of very smart, very business-oriented people, there tends to be this desire for immediate action or analysis. And sometimes the best beginning to success is really starting and spending a lot of time on getting the question right. I think it was Einstein who said where would he spend his energy and effort, and he said 99% on the question and 1% on the solution. It's been my experience in business and running lots of workshops around creativity and challenging problems is that very often smart people just want to go. But if you don't know where you're going, it's hard to get there.

We spend a lot of time, I spend a lot of time working with my clients on trying to identify what the question is. One of the things I've noticed, that very often, my clients, people come to me with a business problem or a business objective, and what we're really ultimately trying to do is turn that business problem or objective into a human problem. Because after all, most businesses are in business to serve people and people consume products and they use products. If we're able to turn that question around from an inward focus to an outward focus, or look at the problem from the outside in, I think we're able to articulate it and define it in a way that makes it go beyond an objective, but now we're solving for a real want or need that's missing or needs to be enhanced in someone's life.
