If communities help shape leaders, then leaders should pay it forward and do the same in return. Afshan Ali, founder of SkyTherapist, discusses why leaders should be servants to the communities in which they live.

“Community involvement helps develop your leadership skills by keeping you connected to the idea of servant leadership and empathy. It also keeps you mindful of strategic management challenges that are happening in a different context,” she says.

Community support is important to me because it gives me a fresh perspective, it keeps me connected to my empathy and it allows me to connect with a community that I get to call home. So it's really a priority, and it's something ingrained in me I think since I was a child almost. Both my parents are the eldest of their 14 siblings above them, and they immigrated to the U.S. after being married for two weeks. And to them, the idea of success was not individual. They didn't see themselves as successful unless their entire families were successful, and that concept spread to the community as well.

So sometimes I'll see these minimum hour requirements to do community service, and that idea is so foreign to me because it's just something that we did growing up because it was our duty. It was almost like our honor. And so, you know, the community that gives you to you and advances you is where you should invest your time and efforts to advance it.

Community involvement helps develop your leadership skills by keeping you connected to the idea of servant leadership and empathy. It also keeps you mindful of strategic management challenges that are happening in a different context. One of the organizations that I'm involved with is actually doing a national expansion right now. Another one is taking a national program and focusing it on the state level.

Each of those has some interesting implications that you have to work through and understand the implications of. And that framework is applicable in your daily activities as well. You can also extend that into resource management. These organizations are doing great deals of work and making great impact with very little in the way of resources. So those are lessons in resourcefulness whose concepts apply to our daily activities.

And finally, it gives you a network and expands it in a way that can be useful for other initiatives you have going on, and it puts you in the company of people who are equally devoted to the community as you are.
