Finding volunteer opportunities that align with your goals or values can be challenging. Afshan Ali, founder of SkyHealth, discusses how to find community organizations and the assessments you should make before working with them.

“Assess the readiness of the organization,” she says. “In order to really make something actionable and tactical, it takes getting deep into the conversations about how their operations work and what their philosophy is for their growth.”

If you're looking for a community organization to align yourself with, I first ask myself the question, "What is it that I want out of the experience?" Are you looking to interact with the beneficiaries of the services? Are you looking to lend your skills? Are you looking to develop new skills, expand your network? And you would do some research on the organizations and choose based on that. I'd also assess the readiness of the organization, if it's skills you're wanting to contribute, their readiness to receive that advice and that counseling and that the work that you put in into developing strategic management tactics for them actually have a place to go into context.

If an organization is not ready for the consultations and can't invest the time in order to help you get to know what their challenges are on a deep level, you know, you risk putting in time to develop a general strategy, rather than one that's very specific to where they are in their organization. There might be value in that at a high level. But in order to really make something actionable and tactical, it really takes getting deep into the conversations about how their operations work and what their philosophy is for their growth, or what their goals are specifically on a strategic level.

I've approached an organization that was not ready for the changes. And they were definitely excited about the services and they were wanting them, but their readiness was different because they didn't have the resources to dedicate to that. And so they're so passionate about their work and passionate about improving it, and sometimes raising the fund and measuring the impact. But it does take some resources that are dedicated to addressing specifically the strategic management challenge at hand.
