Award-winning CNN anchor and writer Sharon Frame explains why preparation is critical in seizing opportunities.

“The old saying is luck is when preparation meets opportunity,” explains Sharon. “And that is very true. I don't really believe in luck, I believe in people who work hard, who prepare yourself anticipating what it is you want to do. That is why vision boarding is so very important. You anticipate in your mind what it is you want to do.”

Thanks to preparation and persistence, Sharon had the opportunity to interview Oprah Winfrey. Watch the video to hear this story and to learn how preparation is the key ingredient to seizing opportunities.

So the old saying is luck is when preparation meets opportunity. And that is very true. I don't really believe in luck, I believe in people who work hard, who prepare yourself anticipating what it is you want to do. That is why vision boarding is so very important. You anticipate in your mind what it is you want to do. You look at the end result, you look at yourself down the road 10 years down and visualize what it is you hanker to do and see yourself doing it. Then you reverse come back and say, "What are the practical steps I need to do to manifest what I've already visioned in my life?"

I interviewed Oprah years ago and that was something that preparation met opportunity. We got a call, local station, that Oprah wanted to produce a show, a local story that I had the privilege of writing. And they said, "We want to interview those folks who were on the program with you." So my boss said, "We're going to fly you up to Chicago so you can follow those people who are going to be on the Oprah Winfrey show." So I am preparing myself not just to follow them and cover them being on the Oprah Winfrey show, I am preparing myself to interview Oprah. Hello. How often do you get an opportunity like that?

But when I spoke with the directors and the producers, they said to me, "Sorry, her schedule is busy. There's no way we can do this interview." In my head, I had already visualized sitting down with Oprah, I had already enumerated the questions, I knew exactly what I was going to ask her and I saw the manifestation of that interview on the local station. And because I insisted upon it, I refused to take no. And I got repeated nos. I insisted upon it because I had already visualized it in my head. They had to eventually acquiesce and say, "All right, already. Come on, do the Oprah Winfrey interview. And by the way you only have five minutes with her." I said, "Not a problem."

We sat down for about half an hour and had a lovely time. I was able to produce six parts, a six part series on Oprah because I was prepared, I was ready, I visualized it and I co-created that situation. Now my theory is the opportunity to interview Oprah was always there. Would had I stopped at the first no, I would not be talking about this wonderful story today. That's what a lot of people do. They stop because someone says, "You can't do that. You're not good enough. There's no way that's going to happen for you." But I believe in defying opposition and the impossibility of life because to me when you say, "It's impossible." I say, "Watch me."

There must be an opportunity there somewhere. With every difficulty, with every no, lies the kernel of a possible yes. Some are always running after the yes because that's where the great stuff in life exists in the opportunity to dig through all the stuff and find the gem and find the yes.
