You wouldn’t guess it based her business accolades, but entrepreneur Lisa Bilyeu grew up in a household where she was taught the pinnacle of her life would happen when she got married. It was expected she would find a husband, have kids and stay at home to support them—and for eight years after she got married, that’s exactly what Lisa did. She stayed home and aided her husband as he worked by making meals and tending to the house, but she was miserable in her life and felt trapped in a role she was conditioned to pursue.
Everything changed when Lisa’s husband asked her to help with shipping nutrition bars for their business, Quest Nutrition. The company grew by 57,000 percent in its first three years, and suddenly, Lisa went from housewife to co-founder of the second fastest growing company in North America in 2014. Eventually, the company sold for a whopping $1 billion, and Lisa continued her business endeavors, this time following her dream of filmmaking by co-founding Impact Theory Studios, a production company with a mission to ignite and empower human potential.
Today, Lisa radiates confidence, and she is often asked how she had the courage to move from serving as a housewife for eight years to stepping into a role as a business owner. In fact, it’s what inspired her to write her recently published book, “Radical Confidence: 10 No-BS Lessons on Becoming the Hero of Your Own Life.”
In leadership, confidence is one of the most essential qualities of building influence, because if you don’t believe in yourself, who else will? Leaders who lack confidence have an impossible time gaining followers and, in turn, do not succeed in achieving their goals and actualizing their missions.
